Evergreen Wellness is committed to helping you move forward after difficult or traumatic situations. We all use our minds to cope with predictable stress, process information, reflect on our emotions and self-esteem, and reflect on our experiences. Previous memories and experiences are stored in our mind and pathways are created that act as automatic templates for future learning. While this is usually helpful, the experience of trauma can overwhelm our ability to cope effectively, and the experience may get stored in our memory differently and in ways that make it difficult to respond as we normally would. You may find yourself “overreacting” or behaving in “irrational” ways that do not make sense. You may also develop negative ways you think about yourself in relation to trauma, such as thinking that you were the cause. These negative beliefs and thoughts may influence how you think about yourself in other situations as well. Eye Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy, or EMDR Therapy, works to rewire the brain and connect the traumatic memory to new information. The goal is to reduce the impact of distressing experiences from the past that affect present-day life, and help get you back to living your life in a healthier and more positive way, with reduced stress and anxiety. EMDR is typically used to treat symptoms such as anxiety, depression, anger, panic, guilt, and PTSD reactions. It can also be used to help enhance emotional resources, such as self-esteem and confidence. The result of EMDR is that people are able to release what is unhelpful and distressing from the experience, and take away what is helpful and adaptive.
